2016 Kids are Blooming Event Saturday, May 21

Dean-bloomsThe fifth perennial block planting day will happen this Saturday, May 21st, 2016.

Meet your neighbors, plant some flowers, spread some mulch and celebrate living on one of Brooklyn’s most beautiful blocks!

Once again we will have a wide assortment of free plants, free flowers, and free mulch for you to use in our block’s tree beds and front yards.

The planting, potting and fun all start at 10:30 AM at 1230 Dean Street.

What makes our block so beautiful are the beautiful people who live on it. Including you. We look forward to seeing you on this special day!

2016 Clean and Sweep Event

Special thanks to all of our neighbors who came out and participated in our ‘Clean and Sweep’ event.  We swept, raked and cleaned tree pits on both sides of the street. We also had an opportunity to meet several of the new homeowners and tenants who have expressed an interest in joining our block association.  Let’s not forget the children who rolled up their sleeves and helped out.  Once all of the work was completed the youth and adults shared pizza and cold drinks.

It’s amazing what can be accomplished when we work together. Community Matters.

Thanks again for supporting the 1200 Dean Street Block Association.

Life on Dean Street

1200dean

Mark Winston Griffith is one of our most active members in the community. One of his projects is “Brooklyn Deep“, a digital journalism project covering the changing neighborhoods of Central Brooklyn. Executive Editor. Brooklyn Deep reporter Andrew Caringi just completed a great project documenting the people living on our block, looking at how the community is dealing with rapid change. Lots of familiar faces from the 1200 Dean Street Block Assoiciation!

From the tree-covered stoops of their brownstones, residents of Dean Street, between Nostrand and New York Avenues, have seen a number of changing faces over the past decade. Boasting some of the neighborhood’s most active and influential residents, this block is now more diverse than ever as new residents integrate themselves into the tight-knit community that Dean Street is known for.

Through the lens of portrait photography, Brooklyn Deep tells the story of this rapidly changing block in Crown Heights North and the residents that now define it.

Kids Are Blooming on Dean Street – 2015

We had a fantastic turnout for this year’s “Kids Are Blooming on Dean Street” event on June 6, 2015. A planter for every stoop! Thanks to the kids in the neighborhood who helped fill the pots with gravel, soil and compost, and to all the neighborhood for helping out with their hands (and backs) and tools.
