Kids Are Blooming on Dean Street 2014 – Photos

On May 3, 2014 we held our annual Spring planting and beautification event, “Kids Blooming on Dean Street”. The weather was perfect, and we had a super turnout. Dr. Loni, a volunteer from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden was on hand to help us care properly for our trees and treebeds. Take a look at the photos below:

Helpful Gardening Tips from The Brooklyn Botanic Garden

14120300852_dd5ce62ab8_oWe were lucky to host a wonderful urban gardening clinic held by the Brooklyn Botanic Garden on the eve of our “Kids are Blooming” spring planting event last weekend. We put this helpful information to use in caring for the trees and treebeds on our block during the event, and the BBG has sent along some helpful support material which is full of great urban gardening tips. New York Tree Trust Tree Guard Program

Screen Shot 2014-04-02 at 12.52.07 AM

We are undertaking efforts to get the city to provide tree guards for the remaining tree beds on our block that do not have them. But in the meantime, residents are able to have one installed through a donation program run by the New York Tree Trust. You basically look through the styles they offer, and sizes then make the requested donation, and they will handle everything. It seems that this is cheaper than privately going elsewhere to have this work done, and certainly quicker than waiting for the city to approve the expense.

You can read more about the plan here: http://stewardship.nycparks.org/library/tree_guard.php

And here is a list of the treeguards they offer, and the prices: http://www.milliontreesnyc.org/downloads/pdf/tree_guard_donation_table_2014.pdf

Thanks to Randall for bringing this info to the block association’s attention!
